What is AP Business with Personal Finance?
AP Business with Personal Finance is one of the College Board's new AP courses; its Course and Exam Description (CED) is effective from Fall 2026. It combines business (entrepreneurship, marketing, finance and accounting, management) with personal finance (saving, borrowing, budgeting, investing) in one course.

Free-response questions
- Question 1, Business Canvas Project (25 minutes, 15%): written questions about the project you carried out during the course. You pitch your product idea, explain how you used hypothesis testing to inform a decision, and explain why a challenge entrepreneurs often face may threaten the viability of your idea.
- Question 2, Personal Finance (5%): a fictional individual's or household's financial situation, with quantitative data and goals. You interpret the data and explain how the goals could be reached.
- Question 3, Business Concept Application (5%): a fictional business gathering evidence for strategic planning. You interpret the business data and explain how it could reach its goals.
- Question 4, Business Decision (15%): a fictional business choosing between two courses of action. You set decision-making criteria, compare both options on their financial and non-financial implications, and make a supported recommendation.
The Business Canvas Project: the key point for self-study students
The Business Canvas Project is a modified version of the Business Model Canvas developed by Strategyzer in 2005. According to the CED, the project is a required course component: students, working alone or in teams of up to three, develop a product or service idea that addresses an identified customer problem, need or want. They are not expected to launch the business, but their project work is assessed through Question 1 on the exam. The project starts with customer interviews in Unit 1 and runs through Units 2–4; the CED lists the deliverables to complete by the end of each unit.
If your school does not offer the course and you are preparing on your own, the exam will still ask about your project, so you need to have actually carried one out; otherwise you cannot give concrete answers to a question worth 15% of the score. This is our practical reading of the CED's description. We recommend planning the project against the unit calendar from the start.
When is the exam?
The AP Business with Personal Finance Exam is on Tuesday 4 May 2027, session 1 (morning). At Prometric Istanbul it starts at 10:00. If your school does not offer AP, see our Prometric Istanbul registration guide; registration period 1 closes on 6 November 2026.
How to prepare
- Start the project early. Customer interviews and a first product idea belong to Unit 1; do not leave them for the last months.
- Do not skip personal finance. It accounts for 20–25% of the multiple-choice questions and all of Question 2.
- Practise reading financial statements. Stimulus material includes financial statements and data visualisations.
- Use a routine for the decision question. Question 4 asks you to set criteria, compare two options and make a supported recommendation; repeat these three steps in every practice.
- Check your calculator. Look at the College Board's list of permitted calculators before exam day.
A business idea at school, financial literacy for life
Testing an idea with real customers, reading a budget, making a reasoned choice between two options: this exam measures skills that matter well before university. If your school does not offer the course, our AP Business with Personal Finance course can take you through the units and your project step by step. Our practice exam sets are in preparation; join the launch list. One caution: which AP Exams count in Europe varies by university; TU Eindhoven, for example, lists AP Business with Personal Finance and AP Cybersecurity among the AP Exams it does not accept. Let's check how this course counts at your target universities in a free pre-assessment.
